Ready for Liftoff: A Decade of Waiting for My Virgin Galactic Spaceflight

I have been on the Virgin Galactic astronaut list for over ten years. My spot in line is 444, and the wait has been long. Over that time, many people have left the list, frustrated or impatient. I haven’t. Because for me, this isn’t about rushing. It is about being ready for something that only comes once in a lifetime.

Seeing Earth From a New Perspective

Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the night sky. Growing up, I would often lie on my back, looking up at the stars, and imagine what it would be like to be up there looking down at Earth. That curiosity has grown into a goal of mine, and now it is something I can realistically pursue. If I could go back and tell my younger self, I don’t think I’d be able to believe it.

I want to see the fragility and beauty of our planet as a tiny sphere floating in the depths of space. I want to bring that view back to Earth with me, not just in my mind, but into the way I live and make decisions.

The Bigger Picture

Commercial spaceflight is no longer science fiction. Virgin Galactic is making it possible for more people to experience what only a few have ever seen. Every flight teaches us more about the extraordinary capabilities of humans and the technologies we create, and makes us think deeper about how we care for the planet we call home.

When I finally get the chance to fly, I expect it to deepen the values I already carry, reminding me, and anyone listening, that how we treat our planet matters. Seeing Earth from above will make every choice on the ground feel that much more meaningful.

Counting Down

As my flight approaches, I am thinking less about the speed of launching into space or the view from the spacecraft and more about the clarity it will give me. I want to return focused, purposeful, and ready to apply what I learn in everything I do, from mining to business building and the people I support.

When I get to that spacecraft, I hope to look down and feel what it means to be a steward of our planet, a leader in our industries, and a witness to something few get to experience. That is the ultimate goal I have been preparing for all these years, and I am beyond excited to lift off someday in the near future.

Law Firm Years: Proving Ground for Leadership

For those who know me from my work in the mining industry, it sometimes comes as a surprise to learn that I began my career as a corporate finance and securities lawyer. Many years before I founded Intrepid Metals Corp  and Excalibur Metals Corp., and made the leap across the boardroom table to the business side, I worked for a premier Toronto law firm, and later a corporate finance boutique firm in Vancouver, assisting companies with raising capital and making acquisitions.  After eight years of 80-hour weeks, I decided it was time for a change. The truth was, what my clients were doing excited me more than what I was doing to help them. It was time for me explore the adventure of entrepreneurship. It’s the same impulse that led me to reserve a spot on one of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic suborbital flights. Ironically, moving beyond the inner atmosphere may turn out to be easier than moving beyond the confines of corporate law as the transition was not easy at first....
